In Praise of Music/Brahms’ Missa Canonica
Our spring program takes us on a whirlwind tour through Germany in the late eighteenth to nineteenth centuries:
- Selections from Brahms’ delectable Four Quartets, Op.92;
- Mendelssohn’s lyrical “Lob des Frühlings” (Praise of Spring);
- Two works from Felix Mendelssohn’s talented but often overlooked sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel;
- A set of partsongs from Haydn, applying the composer’s elegant style in settings ranging from prayer to impish humor;
- The long-lost Missa Canonica by Brahms, an early work thought destroyed, and published for the first time in 1984 when a copy was discovered.
